BENFORD

Returns the probability of occurance PD of the first decimal or first two decimals (D) according to the Benford’s Law (, following a logarithmic distribution). The probabilty is represented in form of a number between 0 and 1.

Syntax

BENFORD(num)

num - is the number which represents the first digit or first two digits of which the probablity of occurance is to be worked out according to the Benford’s Law.

Example

BENFORD(1) returns 0.30103000
BENFORD(9) returns 0.04575751
BENFORD(10) returns 0.04139269
BENFORD(99) returns 0.00436478

Remark

Plotting a chart of the probability of occurance of 1 to 9 (in a large population of numbers), you can expect to get a chart like the one shown below.
